Indicator 11

Demonstrate evidence-based practices for developing all students’ background knowledge to enhance the ability to read critically, including students with characteristics of reading difficulties and dyslexia.

In my Observation 2 Lesson, our main goal was to read and comprehend an informational text about the moon landing. Prior to teaching, we also discussed knowledge that they have already developed about outer space both in class and out of class. To help students to better understand the text, there were a few things we had to touch upon and learn first. One such thing was to teach students about multiple meanings. To accomplish this, I had them imagine certain words that have multiple meanings such as bat and then apply that new taught skill to the text that uses familiar words with unfamilliar meanings. To also prepare students for this text, we read an informational story about the moon phases and the characteristics of the night sky. This was done to build their understanding of characteristics of outer space as well as the moon. To further build students understanding of outerspace, we did a lesson a week later that more in-depth goes over concepts of planetary revolution, objects found in space, and characteristics of planets, stars, and the sun.
