Indicator 5
Demonstrate evidence-based practices for developing phonics skills and word recognition for all students, including students with identified reading deficiencies and those with characteristics of dyslexia.
In my Video Rationale 2 lesson, the focus was to have students differentiate between different short vowel sounds and correctly identify each short vowel sound in picture cards. The beginning and ending letters were given. Students were expected to identify the word from the image, sort the cards into vowel sounds, and self-check via writing to see if they were correct. I verbally segmented the sounds so students could really hear each phoneme in the word to guide their identification. I did this lesson with these students beause these students require much support and scaffolding to read at grade level independently. These students would benefit from having foundational skills like vowel sound indentification reinforced because there is still an area of need for connecting sound to print.
