Indicator 13 Example 1.jpg

In the class data set, I noticed that many students in my mentor teacher's class struggled with vocabulary and informational text comprehension in the STAR test. I had ELLs in a small group read and answer questions about an informational text below grade level to strengthen and support these skills. I wanted to reinforce different strategies to tackling a complex, informational text because for these students, they are more fluent when reading but focus more on the act of reading then gathering information from the text. As a result, their independent reading comprehension abilities may be a bit lacking. I also wanted to reinforce strategies for tackling unfamiliar words as they are ELLs and this is a skill needed for ELLs to improve their second langauge acquisition and tackle reading in a language not completely familiar to them. I also wanted to encourage them to help one another since they already receieve pull-out services as a group and have different strengths/areas of support.
