Indicator 8
Demonstrate evidence-based practices for facilitating reading comprehension for all students, including students with identified reading deficiencies and those with characteristics of dyslexia.

In my Observation 3, students and I read the book "Stink Bugs." This text, though it is below grade level, would still be considered above student independent level. While reading, we filled out a before, during, and after chart while reading. In this chart, students predicted before they read, focused on important information as we read, and summarized what they learned. Then they completed a summative assessment where they had to infer stink bug habitat and draw/write about it. I decided to ask comprehension questions and complete this chart with students so they could understand what information is important and how it supports the topic. I also wanted students to use text features as well as create inferences/predictions from the text before and after we read. The purpose of this lesson was to improve student engagement with text and improve their ability to comprehend informational text as their STAR test scores were particularly low for that skill.
