Indicator 18
Demonstrate intentional explicit, systematic, and sequential writing instruction to improve decoding skills.

To practice opinion writing in my Observation 2 lesson, I had students state their favorite recess area from three choices and then write one reason why. I modeled three different examples for each area. Students were to use my sentence frame to write their opinion. Then after finishing, they were to draw an image showing what they wrote. In addition to this, I have given students many opportunities to strengthen and practice their writing in conjunction to this lesson. I chose for students to write about a topic (recess) they feel very passionate about to bolster student engagement. This also gave students the opportunity to justify their opinion as well as write words already familiar to them such as soccer, playground, monkey bars, etc. This builds orthographic mapping also.
