Indicator 3
Demonstrate evidence-based practices for developing oral/aural language development for all students, including students with identified reading deficiencies and those with characteristics of dyslexia.
In my Video Rationale 2 lesson plan, the focus was for students to correctly identify the short vowel sound in CVC words. The success criteria were for students to correctly identify short vowel sounds orally in a list of five words. Since this lesson was designed for students who receive tier 3 instruction, cards with images were utilized and students had to be taught what certain picture cards meant. For many students, they could correctly identify the images but did not have a lot of knowledge of synonyms. For example, we were doing short i sound and the correlated image was a recycle bin. Most students identified that it was for "garbage" and had called it a can so, I had to guide them into understanding that it was called. They also had to differentiate between the sounds as the words were verbalized and we used writing as a self-check for student segmetation errors. As these are the students receieve tier 3 instruction and need the extra reinforcement to better identify the correct phoneme. I chose to do this lesson because these students could use reinforcement in their ability to identify short vowel sounds. Using images and helping them to correctly identify the image will help further their vocabulary development as well as encoding.
