FEAP 1A
Aligns instruction with state-adopted standards taking into consideration varying aspects of rigor and complexity.
The state standard is MA.3.AR.1.2 which requires students to be able to solve one- and two-step real-world problems involving any of the four operations with whole numbers. In order for students to be able to be successful at this standard. Word problems (one and two step) with only addition and subtraction are taught first in conjunction with students using standard algorithm to solve these word problem with proceudral reliability. Then students are taught multiplication next unit and after mastery of multiplication, word problems are reintroduced with multiplication and division. Then once students show solid understanding, a variety of operations are required to solve two step word problems. Students are introduced to this concept over two units so that they have the necessary skills and strategies to be successful. The examples are of two word problems taught to an advanced 3rd grade math class. The pacing for the advanced students is more rapid and students are introduced to a greater variety of problems in a short span of time as they require the enrichment.
