Utilize Student Feedback to Monitor Instructional Needs and Adjust Instruction

During the animal classification lesson, I monitored students’ understanding by reviewing their work during a sorting activity in which they identified the defining characteristics of different animal classification groups. As I observed their responses, I noticed that some students were focusing too heavily on the specific animal pictured rather than considering the characteristics that applied to the classification group as a whole. This indicated that students needed additional clarification to distinguish between traits unique to an individual animal and defining characteristics shared by an entire group.

In response to this observation, I adjusted my instruction by providing students with additional directions and clarification before asking them to complete the sorting activity again. I encouraged students to look at the bigger picture and consider the defining characteristics of the entire animal classification rather than focusing exclusively on the animal shown in the picture.
