Designs instruction for students to achieve mastery
Unit four is students' introduction to multiplication. To develop an understanding of multiplication, I am starting by explicitly teaching students the strategies for multiplication. I decided to start with arrays because they are second grade skill so, students have some preconceptions around arrays. I want to use that background to build students up to multiplication. So, to start our lessons on arrays. I began by defining arrays and explaining how you label them (a number of rows with an equal amount, written as 5 rows of 8). Then I had students create arrays then I had them rewrite them as multiplication facts, and finally solve by counting the total number of circles. We then repeated these types of questions for two days, and I briefly introduced them to division and how to use arrays as a strategy to solve division.
