I noticed that students struggled with regrouping during subtraction, especially across the thousands, hundreds, and tens place without any zeroes when we were learning standard algorithm. We had weeks of instruction on regrouping across zeroes and multiple digits without word problems. To check for misconceptions after moving onto word problems, I would purposefully create word problems with numbers that required regrouping to make sure that students did not still have misconceptions around regrouping.
